Whisky Auction – 22nd September 2004 McTear’s September Whisky Auction saw a packed room of enthusiastic bidders from around the globe patiently waiting on their lots of interest coming up. The first surprise was lot 2, a 1970’s Clynelish and a distillery bottling of Glen Spey from the same period fetching £450 for the pair. Competitive bidding from overseas buyers unable to attend, bidding on the telephone and in the room ensured strong prices with many lots selling at well above the auction estimates. Following strong prices in our April Auction, this September sale results have proved that prices are rising, for the moment at any rate. Over 800 lots came under the hammer in this auction which, having commenced at 10.30am finished at 5.30pm, an exciting day of competitive bidding and intense selling. Some top prices paid were £620 for a distillery bottling of Singleton-20 year-old bottled for the 20th Anniversary of the distillery, Dalmore-30 year-old in a Crystal decanter with Sterling Silver label that fetched £1400, Glengoyne-10 year-old bottled in the 1950’s that fetched £1150 and Bowmore bottled for the Blair Castle International Horse Trials fetched £750 per bottle. Black Bowmore prices continued to rise, two bottles fetched £1100 and £1350 against an average of £830 per bottle paid in our April auction. Two Rare Strathmills, a limited edition of only 100 decanters bottled for the Centenary of the distillery fetched £680 and £700. The sale also included old distillery bottlings, bottled in the 1970’s such as Ardbeg-10 year-old that fetched £270, Lagavulin-12 year-old fetched £270 and Springbank-12 year-old that fetched £330 and £440. The Glenlivet-25 year-old bottled for The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 fetched £450, the highest price paid to date at auction. Our next Fine and Rare Whisky Auction takes place prior to Christmas on 8th December. Entries are invited until late October and catalogues will be available in print from mid-November.
