The Whisky Sale
The whisky department at Bonhams had a very successful fourth year in 2011. We held a total of eight standalone sales throughout the year, four in Edinburgh, which had increased last year from three, two in New York and two in Hong Kong and the additional whisky section in The Scottish Sale in Edinburgh in August. In March we held a single lot sale for charity when we offered the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet-70 years old-1940 which fetched £15,000.
The average selling rate both by lot and value for these sales was over 90% and international interest from buyers is on the increase, internet bidding is proving very popular with our overseas bidders.
In October this year we had two significant highlights, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Macallan-1928 at £16,200 and the rarest Glenlivet-1883 to ever appear at auction over a twenty five year period fetching £18,000. However, this was not the highlight of the year, in December in Edinburgh we established a new world record for the highest price ever achieved for the sale at auction of a single bottle of single malt whisky by the result for “The Glenfidich Janet Sheeds Roberts Reserve-1955” at £46,850.
Very Rare Whiskies, Fine and Collectable Single Malts, Very Rare Blended Whiskies
The Glenfiddich-50 year old, fetched £9,000 in March
Comments on The Willard S. Falsom Collection: "A hugely sucessful series of sales in International locations"
Bonhams are delighted with the results, these sales have given us the opportunity to expand into the International arena and have established ourselves as the Market Leaders in this field.
Martin Green, Bonhams Whisky Specialist comments: “In over 20 years of conducting whisky auctions, this is the most exciting collection I have ever handled.” “Many of the bottles included in the collection will never be released again or repeated by the Whisky Industry and so the sale of the collection provides the opportunity to buy many collectables of the future”
Willard began his 18-year love affair with Single Malt Whisky in 1988, while reading an article in USA Today listing the best bars in the United States for Single Malt. One of the bars listed was only 10 minutes from his home and, upon reading the article, took his wife for their first Single Malt Scotch tasting.
Willard would spend the next 18 years reading everything ever written about Scotch, highlighting every paragraph of interest and keeping copious notes in the margins. He scoured the liquor stores of the Bay Area until he had everything in his collection that could be found, before widening the search. Willard established relationships within the Scotch community from San Francisco to Dufftown and toured the Highlands, the Lowlands, Speyside, Islay, and Orkney. He purchased whisky from all over the UK and shipped it to a hotel in London, where the Scottish hotel manager would keep his whisky under lock and key until he came to pick it up.
He brought his wife and son with him to the UK on many of his trips, not to show the world to them but to have them carry suitcases full of whisky! Willard believed that it would be in the interest of his collection to have one of every bottle and if one of every bottle was good, then two of every bottle was twice as good!

The Whisky Sales – Throughout 2010
All of our sales have seen excellent prices being paid, very competitively, for old and rare malts which continue to be in great demand. Ardbeg, Bowmore, Glenfarclas, Highland Park Lagavulin, Laphroaig, The Macallan as ever, Mortlach, Rosebank, Springbank and Talisker performed well and fetched very healthy prices. Old and very rare blended whiskies are alos much sought after by the discerning market.
The sales have been a resounding success illustrating that the market is still very strong and that demand for rare and collectable whisky continues to grow healthily.
